Specialized Learning for Health Systems Leaders
Specialized Learning for Health Systems Leaders
The Asian School of Governance's MPHplus+ program builds upon the strong foundation of public health education worldwide by providing specialized learning experiences in complex, emerging, and interdisciplinary areas of health systems leadership. MPHplus+ offers complementary opportunities for deeper exploration in crucial fields like health systems governance, digital health, climate and planetary health, health equity, one health approaches, health financing, community-based participatory approaches, health diplomacy, and intersectoral collaboration. MPHplus+ enriches existing MPH programs through supplementary educational opportunities for current students and alumni practitioners, connecting learners to global trends in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
MPHplus+ strives to partner with MPH programs and public health practitioners by offering co-curricular, extracurricular, and potentially curricular enhancements, including executive education formats. We believe that all aspiring and current public health leaders deserve opportunities to deepen their knowledge and skills for intersectoral, systems-level leadership throughout their careers, building on the excellent foundation provided by their MPH education. Our program focuses on:
Expanding Access: Providing specialized learning experiences that complement MPH curricula, offering students and alumni opportunities to explore emerging fields and develop capabilities for leading across clinical care, public health, policy, community, and private sector boundaries.
Fostering Innovation: Connecting students, alumni, and practitioners to innovative approaches in health systems leadership through specialized training in emerging fields like digital health and AI in healthcare, climate change and planetary health, health equity and social determinants of health, one health approaches, health systems financing and governance, community-based participatory health, health diplomacy and global health security, as well as the practical application of UHC and the health-related SDGs.
Strengthening Connections: Supporting MPH programs in expanding their networks and offerings, particularly in niche and interdisciplinary areas that bridge traditional public health with clinical practice, policy, management, and community action. This includes facilitating lifelong professional development for MPH alumni and building capacity related to UHC, the health-related SDGs, and their implementation through intersectoral collaboration.
MPHplus+ offers a range of program components designed to complement and enhance existing MPH education, tailored to the specific needs and context of partner MPH schools, health systems organizations, and public health agencies. These may include:
Co-Curricular Activities: Workshops, seminars, and guest lectures featuring leading experts in health systems leadership, intersectoral collaboration, and health-related SDG implementation. These offerings will often be done in collaboration with the social labs of the Asian School of Governance, WHO regional offices, UN agencies, health systems partners, or through our network of partners across countries and health systems.
Extracurricular Programs: Leadership development programs, health systems case study competitions, research projects, and specialized training programs focused on emerging areas including those related to UHC and the health-related SDGs. These may include fellowships, health systems internships and practicums, co-listed courses with clinical and policy institutions, intersectoral capstone projects, and community health impact initiatives.
Co-listed Programs: Inter-university and transnational collaboration is encouraged by aligning curricular projects across universities, facilitating student-to-student collaboration that cross university and country boundaries.
Curricular Enhancements (Subject to Agreements): Collaborative development of specialized courses or modules that can be integrated into or offered alongside existing MPH curricula, providing opportunities for deeper learning in interdisciplinary fields that bridge public health with clinical care, health policy, health systems management, and community health, including those focused on UHC and health-related SDGs.
Executive Education and Alumni Development: Targeted training programs designed for MPH alumni and other public health practitioners, health systems managers, clinical leaders transitioning to policy roles, community health directors, health program officers, and other professionals working in health systems and related fields. These programs focus on practical skills and knowledge for career advancement, including intersectoral collaboration, health systems strengthening, and UHC/SDG implementation.
Lifelong Learning Network: Creating a community of practice that connects current MPH students with alumni practitioners, fostering ongoing professional development, mentorship, and knowledge exchange throughout careers in public health leadership.
MPHplus+ works in close partnership with MPH schools and programs, health systems organizations, public health agencies, clinical institutions, community health networks, and WHO/UN agencies to identify areas where supplemental programming can add value and create new opportunities. We collaborate with faculty, administrators, health system leaders, agency representatives, and international health organization officials to design and deliver programs that align with their institutional goals, professional development needs, and the global UHC and health-related SDG agenda, with a particular focus on creating access to specialized training in complex, emerging, and intersectoral fields of health systems leadership.
